It's not O/V/R yet...
British Mudrer Boys may have imploded last year, but that hasn't stopped the concept of the hard techno super-group dead in its tracks. Former BMB member Surgeon has teamed up with Ben Sims to form the DJ duo Frequency 7 - although surely it's only a matter of time before they make the logical move into co-production - and the other ex-BMBer (just noticed how close that abbreviation is to bomber - sorry...) Regis has joined up with James Ruskin to start O/V/R. While they had been kicking this idea about for the past few years, the first official collaboration was a remix of Ruskin's 'Lahaine' last year. Now O/V/R are taking the project a few steps further, helping to relaunch Ruskin's Blueprint label with their first full EP together (Ruskin also has a solo EP due on the label). Having had a few listens to their debut EP, the signs are promising: pulsing grooves with a raw, organic sound, jacknifing percussion and a decidely morose yet hypnotic feeling coupled with a punchiness that's unmistakably of that UK techno ilk and you have a very powerful debut that makes reference to both of their pasts as well as the current grimy Berghain sound. With a second release already in the can, this super-group, joins the Sims/Surgeon collaboration and the Sandwell label on the steady, stealth-like re-emergence of techno's harder proponents. It's not O/V/R yet...
Just got this, fine, dark, throbbing grooves.

thank god for this. Been tiring of hearing such "deep" music during peak times at clubs. I've been missing the frantic energy of a good harder techno dj. Don't get me wrong I still think there is plenty of great music being put out on the "deeper" side of things. I just want to hear something different at a club at 1am or so.
I've been a fan of the downwards camp and james ruskin for ahwile now. Speak to Me by Regis was and always will be one of my favorite all time tunes. Function from Sandwell also did a few of releases w/ Regis as Portion Reform on Downwards. not to mention synewave and the first couple of User records.
The mixes by Frequency 7 lately are total beasts of techno sets. maybe a little too upfront for the "deep" tech house set these days, but remarkable for the insanity it combines from surgeon and sims.
