Get Some Sleep!

I’m going back in time for this week’s featured set, it’s Sleeparchive live in Amsterdam in 2005. If you can ignore the zany (or just plain annoying) MC at the start of the set, then the Sleepy one treats us to some of the best stripped back techno of the past few years. Sure, Sleeparchive wears some of his influences quite visibly-  Sahko, pre-haircut Hawtin, etc -  but the most striking thing about this performance, apart from the way that it builds, ebbs and flows perfectly, is the great economy of sound at play. There are no superfluous elements, every kick, percussive tick and effect has its place and function. Unsurprisingly, four years later, it still sounds as fresh as it did then. Grab it here and here….

I'm so looking forward to this...You've got the goods, Richard.

Pre-haircut Hawtin. I like that.

this one is great alright. is it the voltt one? did i hear mention of some new sleepy sometime soon?

this must be the one where the MC goes 'sleeparchive. complete liiiiiiiiiiiiiive.' this kept me amused for a very long time.

I agree with the comment about economy. I got to see Sleeparchive last summer at the Anti-Pop festival in the north of Portugal, over a massive sound system, outdoors, at four in the morning. The beautiful thing about such restrained music in a situation like that is that every little detail becomes crystal clear. He also expertly built his set. It was a real musical highlight of last year.

i've been buying old sahko mika vainio stuff of late. just got the aste 12s. it's a recent release of old unreleased stuff. it's totally deadly.

erm, tip!

new sleeper is out and it's a noiser! i wonder if he's going to fully retire the sleeparchive sound of old?
